5 hikes to do from the campsite in Aydat
Florian Meyer • November 26, 2025
It is possible to hike directly from the campsite to Aydat with trails in the volcanoes for an hour or a day! Leave the car, van or motorhome parked and enjoy the vast spaces that surround us. These hikes are aimed at occasional walkers as well as the most motivated, with paths accessible to families but also real day trips.

- Puy de la Combegrasse, a must-do in one hour! This is a walk to take even if you are only staying one night at the campsite. Count on a good hour, including a short, steep climb to reach the top, but with no major difficulties. And the climb is worth it: at the top, you'll have a 360° panorama of the Chaîne des Puys and the Sancy massif (with 2 orientation tables). It's also a great spot to watch the sunset (bring warm clothing)! This hike is suitable for children from 3 years old if you take your time. Note that dogs are not allowed during the summer season, from May to October.
As a bonus: the booklet "Discovering the Puy de Combegrasse" (available at the campsite reception)
The Puy de Combegrasse hike (note that the starting point is not the campsite)
⏱️ Duration: ~1h (3h with extension to the Puy de l'Enfer + Narse d'Espinasse)
🧒 Children: yes, from 3 years old taking your time
🐕 Dogs: no from May to October (summer pastures)
🌋 Interest: 360° panorama, sunset, volcanoes close to the campsite
- Puy de Vichatel, a magnificent crater in 2h30!
It's the second deepest crater in the Chaîne des Puys after the Puy Pariou, and it's possible to descend inside, a great experience! A large part of the hike is through woodland (very pleasant on sunny days) with beautiful views from the top. The walk takes around 2h30 or 3h with children, on a very practicable path.
The route is not signposted from the campsite, but you can't get lost with an IGN map or a GPS app. The route is available online.
⏱️ Duration: 2h30 to 3h
🧒 Children: yes, practicable paths
🐕 Dogs: yes
🌋 Interest: descent into a deep crater, undergrowth, volcanic atmosphere
- Puy de la Rodde, a hike of about 1 hour (3.3 km) partly in woodland, so very pleasant in warm weather! This volcano, located opposite the campsite entrance, was developed in 2025, allowing visitors to enjoy very beautiful panoramas of the Sancy massif and the chain of puys and also to guess its crater at the top. The path is very practicable and accessible without problems for children. A new must-see in the area!
⏱️ Duration: ~1h (3.3 km)
🧒 Children: yes, from 3 years old taking your time
🐕 Dogs: yes
🌋 Interest: recent aménaged panoramas, discreet crater, ideal in hot weather
- Puys de la Vache and Lassolas, the twins in one day! Set out with a picnic to discover these two beautiful twin craters. On the menu: glowing red pozzolana and exceptional panoramas of the chain of puys! To enjoy it, you'll have to tackle two steep slopes and a fair number of stairs. Our tip: climb via Puy de Lassolas, as its path is made of pozzolana, which is very slippery when descending. Along the way, you'll also come across the puys de Charmont and de la Rodde. To discover these puys with young children, it's best to start from the designated parking lot.
Proposals fora 16km loop between the campsite and the Puys de la Vache and Lassolas or a longer alternative with a 18.5 km route from the campsite.
⏱️ Duration: day (16 to 18.5 km from the campsite)
🧒 Children: rather older / good walkers
🐕 Dogs: yes (beware of slopes and stairs)
🌋 Interest: red pouzzolane, twin craters, emblematic landscapes of the Chaîne des Puys
- Lake Servières, a day's discovery! This lake was formed in a volcanic crater and offers a still wild landscape. The hike to get there from the campsite is a round trip without particular difficulty with several beautiful viewpoints. It is possible to eat on the way at Pessade. The hike of about 19 km is done by following the white and red GR markings from the campsite.
⏱️ Duration: day (approx. 19 km round trip)
🧒 Children: yes for older ones or if they are used to walking
🐕 Dogs: yes
🌋 Interest: wild volcanic lake (and sublime!), gentle hike, preserved natural atmosphere
These hikes starting from the campsite are ideal for fully enjoying the volcanoes without any constraints. Whether you have an hour or a whole day, just put on your shoes and head out on an adventure, directly from your site or your accommodation. And if you have any doubts about the route, the weather, or the level, don't hesitate to come and see us at the reception.
