5 running and trail courses in the volcanoes

Florian Meyer • May 1, 2021
Do you want to enjoy your vacation to stretch your legs? Here are some ideas for routes on the paths surrounding Camping Les Volcans, for beginner joggers or experienced trail runners. All the routes presented here start directly from the campsite or are accessible on foot, without taking the car.

Running in the volcanoes has several advantages: beautiful well-maintained paths, a hilly terrain and a dreamlike scenery! So don't forget your sneakers when packing your suitcase, you might regret it.

We offer you 5 trails starting from the campsite that we have tested with varying elevations and distances to suit all tastes:
- The small loop of La Garandie, 4km, easy.
- The  big eight of the volcanoes, 6km, moderate.
- Loop of Narse d'Espinasse and Puy de Combegrasse, 10km, moderate.
- Puy de Vichatel and tour of Puy de Charmont, 11km, demanding.
- The Puys de la Vache and de Lassolas, 17km, difficult.

The shortest routes are suitable for leisure running, while the longer loops are clearly aimed at trail enthusiasts.

1. The small loop of La Garandie
This is an accessible circuit with very little incline, which allows you to take a tour of the village and enjoy nice views. Despite a passage on the Puy de l'enfer, you shouldn't suffer too much! Ideal for loosening up your legs, discovering the trail, or digesting a truffade :-)

2. The grand eight of the volcanoes

This circuit will make you draw a figure 8 by passing over the crater of Puy de Combegrasse and by going around Puy de la Rodde. But it will also be a kind of big eight with an alternation of ascents and descents. Its 150m of unevenness make the 6km of the route less easy than it seems. Your reward: the incredible viewpoint at the top of Puy de Combegrasse!

3. Loop of Narse d'Espinasse and Puy de Combegrasse

The advantage of this loop is thatit is fully marked (yellow marking and PR), no risk of taking the wrong path!

Two major points of interest: the Narse d'Espinasse at the foot of the Puy de l'Enfer and especially an exceptional panorama 1km before arrival with a 360° view of the chain of puys and the Sancy massif.

4. Puy de Vichatel and tour of the Puy de Charmont

One main challenge with this circuit: the ascent of Puy de Vichatel. Arrived at the top you'll have tired legs but you'll also take in the breathtaking views! The panorama of the chain of puys and the Sancy massif should give you the strength needed to reach the summit :-)

The route is entirely on a path, with just a departmental road to cross twice (caution!)

5. Puy de la Vache and de Lassolas

Your calves are likely to heat up for this demanding but superb route! The cherry on top is the passage at the top of the twin puys of Lassolas and La Vache with very beautiful panoramas to discover. If there is no continuous signage on the route, the path is always well-maintained and practicable. Very little road, mainly crossings where you will need to be careful, especially at the Col de la Ventouse. The two main difficulties are the ascent of Puy de Lassolas (on a pouzzolane soil) and the descent of Puy de la Vache with many steps.

Whether you're an occasional jogger or a confirmed trail runner, these routes offer varied pleasures without logistical constraints. By leaving directly from the camping, we save time… and fully enjoy the volcanic landscapes. Don't hesitate to ask us for advice at the reception, we obviously know these paths well and Florian tries to run from time to time :-)
